Olivier Chaulieu

Olivier Chaulieu discovered art in 1972. Small portraits or landscapes, usually oil on canvas, inspired him, and even then he was already haunted by the idea of abstraction. Egon Schiele, Guayasamin, Braque, Stael and Zao Wou-ki informed his early work. Later on, these early influences would be given further substance by Rembrandt, Giacometti, Lucian Freud, Bacon and Turner.
Between 1979 and 1981, he studied graphic design and illustration at Met de Peninghen’s academy, joining the Studio Desgrippes, where he specialised in packaging, corporate image and logo-making. In 1982, he began to free-lance as a graphic designer.
Today, however, he has returned to the painting which continues to haunt him. Themes which which persist in his work are portraits, still lives, landscapes and abstractions. Classical themes serve as a vehicle for that elusive link with abstraction which still fascinates him: the narrow fault-line between the abstract and the figurative which navigates around traditional narrative without lapsing into merely decorative abstraction. These fugitive moments, these failures and defaults, which themselves bring us closer to the mystery of human existence, create his creative vocabulary and nourish him as an artist; they lead him further down that track into the heart of the self, to everything which precedes emotion itself.
Beyond the words we cannot say: painting the forbidden and unspeakable.
Beyond the skin to the bone itself: revealing the intimate fragility of man.
Beyond the subject through the shock of colour, the vanishing of a gradient, the escape proposed by shadow: evoking the fears and fascinations which always lie just a little further beyond and out of our reach.

Olivier Chaulieu découvre la peinture en 1972. Petits portraits et paysages à l'huile mais déjà l'abstrait le hante. Egon Schiele, Guayasamin, Braque, Nicolas de Staël ou Zao Wou-ki le guident. Influences qu'il complétera plus tard par les expressionnistes en général mais aussi Rembrandt, Giacometti, Lucian Freud, Bacon ou Turner.
De 1979 à 1981, il étudie l'illustration et le graphisme chez Met de Penninghen. Il intègre ensuite le Studio Desgrippes, spécialiste en packaging et logotype. A partir de 1982, il s'installe à son compte comme graphiste free-lance.
Il renoue aujourd'hui avec cette peinture qui n'a jamais cessé de l'habiter. Et de nouveau : portraits, natures mortes et paysages jusqu'à l'abstraction, cette abstraction qui le fascine et dont il cherche à faire le lien avec les grands thèmes classiques. Trouver l'étroit passage entre figuratif et abstrait, fuir la facilité de la narration en évitant de tomber dans l’écueil du décoratif. Le fugitif, les failles, les défauts – tout ce qui peut rapprocher du mystère de l'humain – nourrissent son vocabulaire pour rappeler la fragilité et l'intensité du passage.
Au delà des mots, de ceux que l'on ne peut dire : peindre l'indicible.
Au delà de la chair, jusqu'à l'os : tenter de révéler la fragilité intérieure de l'homme.
Au delà du motif, par le subtil jeu des valeurs et des couleurs, par la rupture des masses colorées, l'évanescence d'un dégradé ou la fuite que propose une ombre : évoquer les peurs, les fascinations.
